01 Is the MCP-1 Obsidian a true standalone beat machine?
Yes. It's fully DAW-less: sequencer, drum pads, sampler, synth engine, and mixer all run on ObsidianOS directly on the hardware. Boot time is under 3 seconds and your last session is recalled instantly. A laptop is optional: USB-C lets you also use the MCP-1 as a 32-bit studio audio interface if you want one.
02 How does it compare to an Akai MPC Live II or Maschine+?
The MCP-1 Obsidian sits in the same standalone hardware category as the MPC Live II, MPC Key 61, and Native Instruments Maschine+, but takes a different philosophy. We removed the menu trees and skeuomorphic UI, built a custom real-time OS, added a 120Hz OLED instead of a low-refresh LCD, and machined the whole chassis from a single block of aluminum. Same job: a standalone beat machine. Different instrument.
03 Can you make professional beats without a DAW on this drum machine?
That's exactly what it's built for. The 16-track step sequencer handles pattern chains up to 64 steps per track with per-step parameter locks. The sampler chops, stretches, and layers with no audible artifacts up to ±50% speed change. The synth engine is a 4-voice polyphonic analog-modeled instrument. Mix it with per-track EQ, compression, and master bus saturation, then export directly to Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or FL Studio if you ever want to.
04 What audio quality does the hardware sampler deliver?
Dual Burr-Brown DACs at 32-bit / 96 kHz. Balanced TRS stereo outputs, a dedicated headphone out, and a stereo input for sampling. The in-house time-stretch algorithm is artifact-free up to ±50% speed change, rivaling the best DAW-based samplers.
05 How much storage does the MCP-1 have, and can I expand it?
256 GB of internal SSD, pre-loaded with 12 GB of curated sounds and sample packs designed exclusively for the MCP-1. Wi-Fi 6E Cloud Sync keeps every session backed up to your private vault, so you can start a beat on one MCP-1 and finish it on another.
06 Will my beats export to Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or FL Studio?
Yes. The ObsidianOS session format is open and exports directly to Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and FL Studio. MIDI, stems, and the full session tree come with it. Nothing gets locked inside the machine.
07 How long does the battery last for a mobile beat-making session?
Six hours of continuous use, charged over USB-C. A single rear-panel LED pulses slowly while charging. No screens, no percentages, no distractions.
